I Started Drinking Smaller Cups of Coffee..
Tragic. I know.
Mornings in our house can be crazy. There’s usually a lot back and forth about eating breakfast, brushing teeth, getting dressed, etc. More often than not, I’m leaving a full cup of coffee on the counter as I’m sprinting out the door to get everyone to school on time, only to come home to a cold ass cup of coffee that I won’t finish.
Because let’s be real. A re-heated cup of coffee is NOT the same as a fresh, hot cup of coffee.
I remember one morning, I stumbled into the kitchen, eyes still adjusting to the sun and reached into the cupboard for a cup, as I did every morning. Ready to fill up my lifeline and battle the chaos, I reached for my favorite mug. A giant, white, cylindrical mug with wildflowers, a few different birds, and a couple bees. I love this mug. I love the way it fits in my hand and the way it feels bottomless as I sip my coffee throughout the morning. It’s a mug I definitely won’t take on a car ride, in fear that I would accidentally drop it in the driveway or a parking lot. As I’m reaching for this mug and the sounds of my kids fighting each other is echoing through my skull, I thought, “maybe I should use this smaller cup today so I can enjoy a full cup of HOT coffee for once.”
Whoa. Call me Aristotle. Did I just do something there?
Because this really got me thinking about this concept of enjoying the small stuff. We live in a culture where everything is big and fast. We’re taught to dream big, chase big, to want a big house, big vacations, big lips and boobs and butts and muscles.
Ok, I somewhat understand those last bits.. but not the point!
It feels like the majority desires to have it all at once; the bigger the better. As if, the only way to be happy is to live huge. I’m sure there are people who are happier with that lifestyle, but I think for some of us smaller folk, the little moments are what add up in the end. Sometimes it’s the small moments where you are your partner catch each other’s eye and share that look, only the two of you share, that gets your heart fluttering. It’s taking the long way home to finish your favorite song. It's enjoying a FULL CUP OF HOT COFFEE that doesn’t need to be reheated.
You can always add more to your cup, right? What a great deal of less disappointment I have found starting with a little and enjoying every last, hot drop.
Hey, I’m not talking about coffee anymore…
