Signs Your Nervous System is Begging for a Break.

We hear a lot about regulating the nervous system these days…

Breathwork, meditation, nature, less screen time, movement, cold plunges, morning routines.

And sure, those things can absolutely help. But something I’ve learned through both my own life and the work I do with others is that you can do all the breathwork in the world and still feel completely overwhelmed if you haven't made space in your life to actually feel safe, rested and supported.

Sometimes nervous system regulation requires more than adding another wellness practice to your routine; Sometimes it requires putting your life under the microscope.

Your schedule.

Your relationships.

Your work.

Your boundaries.

The expectations you put on yourself.

The amount of time you spend taking care of everyone else while continuously putting yourself at the bottom of the list.

Chances are, your body may have been trying to get your attention long before you realized you were overwhelmed. Here are some ways that can show up:

1. You Feel Exhausted, But You Can't Relax

You're tired. You finally get a chance to sit down… and somehow you still can't settle. Maybe you reach for your phone. Start another task. Think about everything you should be doing. Or feel strangely uncomfortable when there's nothing demanding your attention.

Rest and regulation aren't necessarily the same thing. Your body can physically stop moving while your nervous system remains on high alert.

2. Little Things Feel Like Big Things

The noise, the mess, someone asking you another question, the text message you haven't answered. the appointment you forgot to make.

None of these things are necessarily catastrophic on their own, but when your system is already carrying too much, one small thing can feel enormous. Sometimes the thing that makes you snap isn't actually the thing you're upset about, it's simply the final thing your system had room for.

3. You Feel Disconnected From Yourself

You know what everyone else needs, but when someone asks what you want, you don’t really know.

What sounds fun?

What makes you feel alive?

What do you want to do with an afternoon that belongs completely to you?

Sometimes adulthood becomes so consumed by responsibility that we slowly lose sight of the things that light us up.

4. Your Body Feels Like It's Holding Onto Something

Tight shoulders.

A clenched jaw.

Shallow breathing.

A heavy chest.

Restlessness.

The constant urge to stretch, move, shake something out or take a giant breath.

Our emotional experiences and our physical bodies aren't completely separate worlds.

5. You're Constantly Looking for the Next Thing That Will "Fix" You

A new morning routine, another supplement, a podcast, another healing practice, picking up a new journal, another “life hack,”

There is nothing wrong with using tools that support you, however the answer isnt always to add a new thing, its to remove something that already exists…

An obligation… An unrealistic expectation… Constant availability.

Is there a relationship dynamic that repeatedly drains you? A schedule with no breathing room? You cannot always self-care your way out of an environment that continuously overwhelms you.

6. There’s No Space in your Life for YOU.

This one is uncomfortable because it requires actual change.

You can practice breathwork, spend all the time in nature, meditate, turn your phone off, take your supplements, drink your tea, but if every minute of your life is accounted for, your nervous system never gets the message that there is room to exhale.

Creating space might mean evaluating your schedule, clearly communicating your needs, asking for help, saying no, and changing expectations.

It doesn't necessarily mean quitting your job or cutting everyone out of your life, it means noticing where your life continually asks you to abandon yourself.

You can meditate yourself out of being stuck in a toxic environment.

7. You Don’t Know Who You Are…

Not productive you, not mom-you, partner-you, employee-you, business-owner-you, caretaker-you.

Just…you.

The version of you who gets excited about something, has interests, who moves because it feels good not because your punishing yourself.

The you who plays music too loud, who creates, laughs as stupid things.. the you who feels present.

Healing isn't about becoming a completely different person, it's about finding your way back to the person who has been underneath all the responsibility the entire time.

Your Body Isn't Another Project

Nervous system regulation doesn't need to become another thing you're trying to perfect. You don’t need a flawless morning routine, hour long meditations, or to constantly be a state of calm. You are still allowed to feel the life around you…

Start by making room for those little answers.

It’s not about more, its about noticing what your body is communicating before it gets too loud to ignore.
